How can you give your favorite dish a modern and fresh twist?

In my cookbook, Modern Hospitality, I take Southern cuisine and put a modern, fresh twist on it. My passion is to inspire others from kids to adults to get in the kitchen and have fun cooking.
Recipes like my turnip green pesto, bacon-wrapped stuffed brussel sprouts, and crispy coconut bites (grits for dessert) are creative ways to use common ingredients. I hope they inspire you to want to try and cook them.

  1. Hello,Whitney one of my favorite dish or dishes i'd say are Tandoori chicken [which i've already cooked by bringing some twist to it ]which was the Pan fried chicken in tomato gravy ..it would be interesting to see how you'll put a twist on it and bring your southern touch to it...'cause that dish required the use of lot of spices in it!the other one would be banana stem thoran which is more of a Southern-Indian dish..which is very unique by it's way..recipes for both dishes can be found in my blog.

  2. I like to cook a whole chicken in the oven , I rub it down with olive oil inside and out and then rub some honey on top of that , I then do a dry rub of blended spices chili powder/ranch seasoning/creole seasoning/ weber grind and grill kickin chicken / Place some water/oil/in a empty beer can and place chicken on the beer can , pour about 1/4 inch of water in bottom pan place in oven at 375 degrees for 1 hour 45 minutes...5 lb chicken .... I check the thickest part of thigh with knife to see if juice runs clear and thats about it :D

  3. Although chicken and dumplings is already a favorite in my house(especially with my daughter), I'm sure your modern take on this traditional dish would make it even better. I do not have a specific recipe in mind for you to modify, because I have yet to find one that is my favorite. This is why I think you should share you unique perspective to create a recipe that will stand out above all of the others. Judging by the excellent results I have had with your recipes so far, I'm sure "Whiteney's Chicken & Dumplings" would become my new go-to recipe when we are in the mood for comfort food.

  4. Hey Whitney! I love to make chicken enchiladas...but I don't do anything really special. I just get tortillas from the store, marinate chicken in enchilada sauce (also store bought), and shred the chicken and cook it with green pepper and onion and roll it into the tortillas, pour more sauce over it and cover it with shredded cheese, bake it, and...that's it. It's good, but it's very boring and that's exactly why I would love to see what kind of spin you would put on it!

  5. One of my kids favorites is oven baked chicken breast. I cook it with squash, zuccini, and asparagus. Then toss it with some pasta, butter or olive oil, parmasan, and lemon juice. I try to cook healthy for the kids. Even though they love it I know I could improve it. Help...

  7. One of my favorite dishes is something my mom has cooked for me since a little boy. It is beef with mushroom gravy, and white rice. When cooked nice and tender it is like heaven! This one may be tough because it is already pretty southern =)

  8. @Alan I have a recipe in my cookbook (Modern Hospitality) for Crispy Onion-Crusted Steak with Mushroom Cream Sauce. I serve it with roasted fresh green beans. This recipe is inspired by a steak dish my mom used to make, as well as the flavors of an old-fashioned green bean casserole.

  9. @Wayne In my cookbook, I have a recipe for Cauliflower Mac N'Cheese. It is a lighter version of mac n'cheese but still the same great creamy and cheesiness!

  10. @Zac I have a good idea for you. How about stuff chicken breasts with your sauteed green peppers and onions and cheese. Then like you would crust chicken breast in panko to pan fry, coat in crushed tortilla chips. Lastly top with enchilada sauce. Delish!
