What I love about Christmas is that it is a time to think about others. I have been blessed with my talent for cooking and especially love using it during this time of year. I believe sometimes the best gifts are those that are handmade vs. store bought. The thought and time put into homemade cookies, candies, breads, and cakes take your gift to special level. Ok so maybe I am being partial because I love when my neighbors bring over a plate full of candies and cookies. I have a sweet tooth!
Not all your Christmas goodies have to be full of butter and sugar though. I gave a Christmas nutrition/cooking class last year to a group of kids. We made snowmen apples. These weren't your normal caramel apples. Instead of caramel covered apples, melted peanut butter covered the apples and then finished with an avalanche of coconut snow. The kids decorated their snowmen with pretzel arms, candy coated sunflower seed eyes, and raisin buttons. This is a guiltless treat for both young and old.
To kick off December and the countdown to Christmas, I want to do something special for all of you. Beginning today, I am giving away a gift every day until Christmas. Your chance to win is easy. Simply either comment on my blog post or answer a question if I post it on my blog. Each winner will be randomly selected. Can't wait to hear from you!
Please include your name and email address so that I can contact you!

Every year, my mom, my two young sisters and I bake a TON of cookies. Most of the recipes are scribbled down on stained pieces of paper passed down by my grandmother (who I never met). Aside from it being a "treat" to have a connection to my family's lineage... the best Christmas treat are BY FAR my mom's "killer cookies." They are small, thin, rectangular/square cookies (about an inch or two in length) but are PACKED with flavor (nuts, coconut, CHOCOLATE). That's why they are called killer cookies -- there's so much packed into them that they'll kill ya if you eat too much. My name is Gia and my e-mail is mancini.ga@gmail.com!
ReplyDeleteall tbe fun flavored coffee drinks!

I would have to say Hot Chocolate! :)
ReplyDeleteMy Grandmother's Date Nut Roll! It just wouldn't be Christmas if I didn't make them. My "Nanny" was a wonderful cook and so many of her recipes are lost to me like her coconut cake with coconut custard between the 3 layers and 7 minute icing on the outside. She only used fresh coconuts and I got to drink the milk from the coconut. The Date Nut Rolls I will preserve for future generations ♥
ReplyDeleteMine has to be chestnuts cooked over hot coals (or roasting on an open fire or in the oven, lol). But the smell and taste of chestnuts definitely signals the Christmas season for me.
ReplyDeleteEggnog is my favorite :]
ReplyDeleteNot directly tied to Christmas, but eggnog has always there to drink at family holiday parties since I can remember. I'm actually going to see if I can find ways to incorporate the Eggnog taste into some pastries this year :]]

ReplyDeleteEach year on Christmas Eve a dear friend of the family would deliver goodies. Among them was the most scrumptious red velvet cake you can imagine. I would wait for the luscious red cake with heavenly cream cheese frosting. Best of all she made the cake twice as big as a normal one. Nice since there were eight of us! YUMM !
ReplyDeleteI love making sand tarts, so that the kids can decorate them. Those were my memories with my mom, who is no longer with us. I love blonde brownies, too.
ReplyDeleteI'm such a screw up. That post went under my son's name. It should have been under me. Goodmorning everyone,
ReplyDeleteChristy Lauzon

ReplyDeleteWhat I want for Christmas? well, the 1st thing is Justin Bieber's new album UnderTheMistletoe :)) and the 2nd thing is the Measuring Utensils used for baking :x I can hardly buy them in my country Vietnam, so... :(

ReplyDelete@Trang in Vietnam are baked desserts not common? Or is it it not common to measure the ingredients

ReplyDeleteI know the contest is over, but chocolate dipped peanut butter balls. My mom had my brother and I roll the balls and dip them in the chocolate. We loved helping her and it made us feel important to be a part of the big xmas bake! I love them to this day (as does my entire family) and we always know they will be on the treat table at all the family gatherings during the xmas season! I would love to try those oreo cream cheese balls, if someone would share a recipe that would be great! Christine @ pzebra4@gmail.com
